Short answer: it depends on the job. A glass of water needs a lower level than a gallon, and some applications need much higher levels. Decide what you want the ozone to do first, then choose a generator whose range covers it.
Start with what you want ozone to do
There are many different reasons for ozonating water, and each needs a different level of ozone. Ask yourself what result you want: is it simply to make sure bacteria and viruses in the water are killed? To break down unwanted compounds as well? Or to have ozone still remaining in the water when you use it? Each of those calls for a different level, from relatively low to very high.
Examples of different levels
- One glass of water: a lower level of ozone.
- A gallon of water: a higher level, because there is more water for the ozone to work through.
- Applications that need ozone remaining in the liquid: very high levels, which need oxygen as the feed gas.
Why the generator type matters
There are many types of ozone generators on the market. They make ozone using different technologies and produce very different amounts of it. Not every generator can do what you want, so check that the one you buy is the right type and makes the right amount.
Which Synergy generator covers what
- WPS-100: up to 80 µg/ml from one chamber. A good fit for one main use.
- WPS-400: two chambers, used independently for lower levels or together for higher levels. A good fit for several uses.
- WPS-120: 8 to 128 µg/ml with absolute settings and a calibrated chart. A good fit when you need a precise level or the widest range.
Getting the level you want
Your concentration comes from two settings: the output setting on the generator and the oxygen flow on your regulator. Use your output chart to find the pair that gives the level you need, and write it down so you can repeat it.
Questions we get asked
What if I am not sure which level I need?
Choose a generator with a range wider than your first use. The WPS-400 and WPS-120 both give you room to go lower or higher later.
Can I use more ozone to work faster?
More is not always better. Match the level to the job and keep everything in tubing and closed containers.
A note on safety
Ozone is a strong oxidizer and it is harmful to breathe. Run your generator in a well ventilated room, keep the ozone inside tubing and closed containers, never breathe it directly, and follow the instructions that come with your unit.
